Deurali Sanitation

The Problem

Many buildings suffered extensive damage during the 2015 earthquakes, including several school outbuildings in the Deurali Village Development Community of Nepal’s Gorkha district.

The Solution

Working with the NGO International Disaster Volunteers, we funded the reconstruction of toilet and hand-washing facilities for nearly 500 students at two school locations in the region.

Project Updates

March 2016

Work is getting underway at the Shree Balkori school, located in the rural village of Ratmatee. We are building new toilet cubicles to provide more facilities and also to ensure that students of both genders, as well as staff, can enjoy some privacy. We are also providing hand washing facilities to help keep staff and students alike healthy and happy.

Framing for the new facility is in place. Volunteers who travel to work on projects with the NGO International Disaster Volunteers work alongside locals to complete these projects.

April 2016

With all of the material transported to Nain, construction is underway for a structure to house the water filtration tanks.

The International Disaster Volunteer (IDV) team has made fast work of the first half of this project in Nepal. Construction went quickly despite the need to hand carry nearly all of the required material directly to the site. To reach this project location, the IDV team informed us:

“To get there from Kathmandu, one must first take a 5-hr bus to Gorkha Bajar, then take another 3-hr bus to Deurali. From Deurali, it is another 2- to 3-hr hike to Shree Balkori”

Local volunteers, school staff, and even students all pitched in to finish up the construction of the new toilet facilities. Over 100 students and staff now have access to the finished facility, a vast improvement from prior conditions.

September 2016

Work has begun at our second location, the Santa Krishna School. For this location, volunteers are rehabilitating an existing facility that had become damaged and unusable.

November 2016

The final installation for the Deurali Sanitation Project was implemented at the Shree Santa Krishna School, located just outside the town of Bhaktapur. This was another location that suffered badly with damaged buildings due to the earthquake, leaving the school with damaged classrooms and an unusable toilet facility. The team from IDV (International Disaster Volunteers) has been able to restore the facilities with repairs to the pipes, drainage and water supply. Volunteer labor restored the structure and even spruced it up with a brand new paint job.
