<image:caption>The Problem The Alpha Nursery School is located in Darjeeling India. Originally started solely as a nursery school, they now serve students through class four. With only six small classrooms, their space is extremely overcrowded and does not allow adequate space for the students. The Solution We will be funding the construction of a new classroom for the school. The new room will help alleviate the overcrowding and give the students and staff some breathing room.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Nepal Greenhouse Project</image:title>
<image:caption>The Problem In two remote regions of the Humla District in Nepal, the local communities – Parangtol and Melchaur – have had to deal with severe hardships over the past eight years, including a massive earthquake, regional flooding, and two years of the pandemic. Nearly two hundred people died of Covid taking away the breadwinners and leaving many families in severe hardship. Those working in farming were severely affected by the lockdown and are still struggling to return to normalcy. For local families already living in poverty and dependent on tourism or migrant workers whose jobs abroad have been lost, the effects have been devastating. The Solution We will be funding the construction of 15 greenhouses that will be built for these vulnerable families. Through a training program, they will be provided with the knowledge and skills to successfully grow a wide variety of vegetables. This will allow them to become more self-sufficient and less dependent on expensive, imported food.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - San Lorenzo Stove Project</image:title>
<image:caption>The Problem In rural Nicaragua wood-burning stoves are often the only option within economic reach of rural families, yet they extract a high price both on the environment and on the family’s health. Not having any ventilation system causes smoke to accumulate in the home causing eye and respiratory issues. It is often women and children who suffer the most from this situation. In addition to the smoke issues, these stoves are very inefficient and require a lot of wood. The need for a lot of wood results in deforestation problems which in turn causes regional flooding. The Solution Ten new fuel efficient stoves will be built for local families. The new stoves will be built with local labor and installed with the help of the families that will use them. As part of the project, families will be educated on the proper use of the new stoves and their maintenance. The new stoves use up to 60% less wood than a traditional open fire stove and are properly vented to prevent any build up of smoke inside the home.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Problem Cooking is a basic part of everybody’s life. In Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala, wood is traditionally used for cooking. The open fire cooking results in household air pollution, causing respiratory illnesses, heart problems and even death. The Solution We have provided the funds necessary for 20 cookstoves to be built for local families working with the local nonprofit, Tui’k Ruch’Lew. The new stoves greatly reduce the amount of wood fuel needed and drastically cuts down on household air pollution.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Problem In the Nicaraguan countryside, families with little means have often lived with very inefficient stoves in their homes. These stoves require large amounts of wood and are poorly ventilated causing heavy smoke to cloud the home resulting in unsafe health conditions for the mothers and families. In addition, because of the need for a lot of wood for these stoves, the countryside has vast areas of deforestation, which leads to soil erosion and flooding. The Solution We provided the funding to have several highly efficient cookstoves built for families. The construction of the stoves used local labor and materials and were built on site in several homes. The stoves burn with very little wood and have a ventilation stack to keep the air quality safe in the home.</image:caption>

This project also contributes to the reduction in the amount of pollution in the community by providing reusable water bottles to all the school children so that they may refill them using the water system.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>The ground crews in Kabale have worked hard to finish up the new toilet facility despite dealing with heavy seasonal rainfall. Having a proper facility for the community center & school is important in reducing the risk of illness that is all too common where there are not adequate sanitation options. We would like to thank everyone who helped support this project. Rukundo International extends their gratitude in being able to complete the construction of this critical component to the scope of work at their new site.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Problem Collaborating with Aatmiya and Citta, we worked with the Community Hospital of Sitalpati, located in the Sindhuli district of Nepal. This brand new hospital facility will serve a region of 10 villages and 50,000 people. When the hospital construction was close to completion, they still needed a water treatment facility that could provide safe water throughout the hospital for both medical procedures and general use. The Solution In this area of the country the hospital is able to access well water, but requires a system to store and distribute treated water that is safe to use within the hospital. We provided the necessary funding to install an underground cistern, as well as a high-grade filtration system.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Problem On the remote island of Nain located in North Sulawesi, Indonesia, access to safe drinking water is difficult to come by. Ground water often has high salt content and locals are forced to pay for water to be brought in by boat. The Solution We funded the installation of two rainwater catchment systems for a school and the local community, which serves over 300 people. Construction went quickly despite the need to hand carry nearly all of the required material directly to the site. To reach this project location, the IDV team informed us: “To get there from Kathmandu, one must first take a 5-hr bus to Gorkha Bajar, then take another 3-hr bus to Deurali. From Deurali, it is another 2- to 3-hr hike to Shree Balkori” Local volunteers, school staff, and even students all pitched in to finish up the construction of the new toilet facilities. <image:caption>In the southwestern region of Cameroon, we are working with the local NGO Social Development International (SODEIT) to provide funding toward improving classroom conditions. The grant will allow five local schools in the Buea region to each receive three new chalkboards for their classrooms. Currently they have chalkboards that are either crumbling completely worn beyond use. Having a good chalkboard is an essential tool for teachers who are providing an education to their students.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Problem The Jonathan Scheffer High School is located in the village of Juanga in the state of Odisha, India. With over 150 students, this school has no toilet facility of any kind. Sanitation is a major problem in rural schools throughout India. Beyond the obvious health issues that this brings by having to use the open field, there is also the stigma for teenagers of being out in the open. The Solution Having previously funded a similar project for the local primary school, we helped fund a new toilet facility for the high school. The finished project has a brick construction with separate boys and girls facility and water for hand washing. The structure also has a separate septic tank.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We are returning to the village of Juanga in Odisha (formerly Orissa), India to collaborate again with our friends at the nonprofit organization Citta. In 2011, we funded the construction of a toilet facility for the local primary school that previously had nothing available to them. Upon completion, the school incorporated a health and hygiene program for the students. There were plans for construction of a similar facility for the nearby high school and the preliminary work had been started, but unfortunately funding ran short and they were unable to finish the construction. We are happy to be returning to help support a second school with the construction of a much-needed toilet facility for the older students. The design and construction will be very similar to the first project completed at the primary school.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Problem Situated in a very remote region of the Limi Valley, three village schools were in desperate need of support for some time. Thanks to the nonprofit Citta, the students receive much-needed assistance. One ongoing problem that they have faced for some time was the lack of any type of sanitation facility for the students at the schools. Being in such a remote region, acquiring the supplies was very difficult. The Solution Working with the Citta team, we funded the purchasing of the needed supplies and transporting supplies to the region for construction. The finished facilities are simple, dry stone construction with a septic tank.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We are happy to announce our second partnership with the nonprofit Citta. Citta has recently been working to help three schools located in the Limi Valley in Nepal. The region is quite remote and the schools are situated in a trans-Himalayan valley. They have several major needs, but at the forefront is the importance of a bathroom for the students. We will be providing the funding to construct a bathroom facility similar to some of our past projects.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Joe just returned to the U.S. after a trip to Nepal and India to check in on some of the projects we’re doing in that area. While in Nepal he met with staff from Citta, the local nonprofit that we are collaborating with for the Nepal Bathroom Project. Back in September, team members from Citta had traveled to the school sites in the Limi Valley where our project will be done. The schools are extremely remote and involves a four day WALK to a height of 4000 meters in order to reach them. Luckily, Joe did not have to make this journey! Due to the logistics for this project, it will likely be Spring of 2013 before work is fully completed. The end result will be a simple toilet facility at three different schools in these small villages where the children currently have nothing. The toilets will be constructed using local materials (such as dry stone construction and a basic septic tank) as there is no easy way to get other types of materials to this location.</image:caption>

This endeavor includes the construction of toilets for two different schools located in the remote Limi Valley of Northern Nepal. Work had begun over a year ago when an avalanche buried the school site and everything had to start over again. Citta founder Michael Daube made a recent trek to the site and reported back with some amazing photographs of the nearly finished project. <image:title>Projects - Fuel Efficient Stoves</image:title>

      <image:title>Projects - Fuel Efficient Stoves</image:title>
<image:caption>This project has a three fold effect on the local region. 1. Families typically use inefficient stoves in their homes to prepare all of their meals. The stoves use a large abundance of wood and have limited or no ventilation. This causes major health issues for all the members of the family, especially the mothers. 2. With all the families needing large quantities of wood, this has caused extensive deforestation in Nicaragua. 3. The less forests means heavier flooding in the region as the ground is not taking in as much water without the trees. This project will be funding new highly efficient stoves to be installed in the local homes of multiple families. The stoves use much less wood and offer a safely ventilated exhaust to keep the home clear of toxic smoke.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We received our final report from the NGO El Porvenir who ran the Stove Project in Terrabona Nicaragua and all of the families now have their new stoves installed. The project created a simple solution to a problem that faces many families in Nicaragua and in other rural communities around the world. Properly designed and vented stoves provide high efficiency in burning wood which means less wood is needed, and smoke is pulled out of the home through a ventilation stack. The images shown here include just a few of the families who benefit from having the new stoves installed in their homes. Look on the walls and you’ll see our logo alongside a maintenance information sheet provided by El Porvenir to ensure the stoves are kept up by the owners. The stoves will provide countless wonderful meals for everyone!</image:caption>

<image:caption>“You all have brought me a great blessing. I have a very beautiful stove; I don’t know how to thank you all. My head doesn’t hurt anymore; I don’t suffer from exhaustion. The doctor had prohibited me from being around smoke, and now I have achieved that. My health is better. I wouldn’t change this stove for anything.” – Doña Blanca Rosa Soza Torres http://theprojectsolution.org/app/uploads/2018/01/Stoves041013c.jpg “I feel relief because I cook calmly, without smoke choking me. My children are able to be close by when I’m cooking, and it doesn’t harm them. How happy I feel.” – Doña Amparo Carmela Hernández</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Fuel Efficient Stoves</image:title>
<image:caption>During the week of December 5th, co-founder Joe Gonzalez traveled to Nicaragua to meet with the team of El Porvenir. Joe visited several families in the Terrabona region outside of the capital city of Managua. The new stoves that we funded have made a big change in the lives of the women who use them on a daily basis. The stoves use less wood, provide a larger cooking surface and most importantly, are properly vented to allow harmful smoke to vent out of the home. Having had the chance to see the stoves first-hand and meet with the people who are using them gives a real sense of accomplishment. The families are so grateful to have the stoves in their homes and relish the change it has made. One woman called it “a gift” that has been given to her, and others commented that friends who visit want to know how they can get one also. The design of the stoves are simple, they use local materials and are built on-site with local labor. This project addressed a major health issue by eliminating the toxic smoke that used to fill the homes during cooking. Deforestation was addressed by having stoves that utilize much less wood during use. Finally, El Porvenir runs a reforestation program with the families that received the stoves and having more trees helps address flooding problems that were an issue in the region.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Problem In the Shauri Yako slums of Kenya, educational programs, support services and even having a general location for community gatherings are limited. The Shauri Yako Community Center was a safe haven and valuable resource for thousands of local people to use for many years. Unfortunately, the years of heavy use and general erosion from the weather left the facility in unsafe conditions and was at risk of shutting down. The Solution We provided critical funds required to have the old facility removed and a new facility was built on the same site. The new construction used stone and mortar to ensure years of longevity. The finished center is of huge importance to the local community.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We are collaborating with The Shauri Yako Community Youth Support Centre located in Kenya. The center is located in one of the local slums and has been serving as a drop-in center, educational facility and community center for over 10 years. The building itself was built with lumber and metal sheeting and has become physically unstable after years of use. With the funding we are providing they will be using a new stone construction to create a more secure facility and continue serving the local community. The center serves 5400 people annually.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Work is underway at the Shauri Yako Community Youth Support Centre in Kenya. The old structure has been removed and a new foundation is being prepared. The new building will come next as stone arrives to create the walls. The chairman of SYSC Joe Mwai, had this to say about the project, “Thanks to your generosity, we are now well on our way to rebuilding our facility to make it safe and stable. Since receiving your first donation in mid-February, we have dismantled the structure of our old centre. It was constructed of timber and iron-sheeting, and was in very poor shape due to wear and erosion. We procured the supplies needed to lay new foundation, including sand, ballast and stones, and retained a mason and three labourers for the construction work. We are happy to report that we have now completed the underground foundation walls that will support the building. The next step is to set the house, fill in the remaining part of the floors and construct new walls.”</image:caption>

In the village of Mangraul, over five hundred residents have to travel to get access to water. Haritika has already created a well for the water, and our funding will allow the addition of solar panels to power a water pump for bringing up the water and distributing it into the homes of the locals. The focus is on providing nutrition and giving the children an incentive to come to school and to maintain regular attendance. The porridge is prepared and served at government aided schools located in rural locations where most families live on less than $1 a day. The Solution We provided the funding to install two water tanks with filters to be used for both clean drinking water and for the preparation of the porridge. The tanks were installed in the Kasinde and Nymiyaga Schools in Uganda.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Problem Located in the Northern State of Uttar Pradesh in India, Bachevra is a small community with limited to no infrastructure. This issue often impacts both water and sanitation. As with many rural areas of India, lack of sanitation for schools and communities can lead to poor hygiene and cause major health issues for the local residents. The Solution Working in partnership with the NGO Haritika, we funded the construction of a new bathroom facility, which will serve the students at the adjacent school and also help serve local residents in the community. A new facility such as this not only brings dignity to people, but prevents the spread of disease.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Work will soon be starting on our latest project, The Bachevra Water-Sanitation Project. Similar to the work we did on our Orissa Hygiene Project, we are again addressing a critical need in another region in India. On this project we have partnered with the organization Haritika, whose mission is to: work with people whose lives are dominated by extreme poverty, illiteracy, disease and other handicaps. This project will be working under their School Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene Education (SSHE) program. This is a comprehensive and focused program to promote the children’s right to a healthy and clean environment, and outreach to families and communities.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Problem Following the devastating earthquake in Haiti, European Disaster Volunteers (EDV) has been working on several projects to improve the lives of the local people. One of these projects is with the Foyer d’Orelph Orphanage and School, which serves 53 orphans and is getting ready to provide education to over 100 students at the school. As with any region that has been struck by a natural disaster, the conditions of buildings and infrastructure have been devastated. The classrooms at the school only had a tarp as protection from the elements, and the women who cook there were drenched when it rained. The Solution This project provided a much-needed roof over a classroom and kitchen. In addition, improvements were made to waterproof the interiors and address drainage problems, which have been causing a serious health risk to the children.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Foyer d’Orelph Roof</image:title>
<image:caption>In addition to putting a roof over the classroom and the kitchen area at the Foyer d’Orelph project in Haiti, we are also addressing much-needed drainage issues. The heavy rains bring standing and backed up water due to poor drainage and floors that are not properly finished. The latest development in Haiti is a concrete project over a large floor area to address this issue. The EDV team tells us: “Between the roofs you’ve funded and the drainage system, there is now no standing water at the orphanage when it rains – a great step in preventing cholera and other water borne illnesses.”</image:caption>

The students are now situated in a safe and dry area to continue their education and have less of a risk of illness now that the area has proper drainage. Finishing this project also means that there is the opportunity for the school to take in more students for the 2011 fall semester. With no access to toilets of any kind (even in most homes), people are forced to use the open fields. When the heavy rains of the monsoons come, this causes an increase in disease. This situation continues in schools where there are no facilities for any of the students or staff. We are going to stock 7000 pieces of bricks for construction. We have now 3000 pieces of bricks at the site and going to have the rest in next 2days. <image:title>Projects - Chisoyo Well</image:title>
<image:caption>The Problem As with many remote areas in Zambia, there is a desperate need for clean drinking water. Over the years, there have been wells built but not maintained or projects for wells that never materialized. This has forced communities to have to walk great distances for water or worse yet, get water from an unsafe source. The Solution Partnering with the African Community Project, we funded the digging of a new well outside of a school attended by more than 250 children with no access to clean water. Once dug, the well helped provide clean water for the children, as well as the local villagers.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Chisoyo Well</image:title>
<image:caption>Due to the rainy season, there was a delay to start the well, but now that things are dry again, digging should begin in a few weeks. The well will be dug outside of the classroom shown in the image and provide clean water for the students. The well technician will be heading out to Chisoyo to get work started.</image:caption>
